Establishment by the city of a hospital for the treatment of persons who may be a menace to the public health because of acute infection was advocated Thursday by Health Commissioner G. C. Ruhland, as an effective means of combatting the activities of medical quacks.
“Milwaukee has taken some advanced steps to meet the problem of social diseases,” said Dr. Ruhland.
Leg Is Broken in Fall While Trying to Escape From Girls’ School.

The latest episode In Opal’s exciting young life was a fall from the third floor of the Indiana Girls’ School at Clermont several days ago, while trying to escape, it was learned today. She lies in the Robert W. Long Hospital with a compound fracture of the right leg. A doctor attending her said Miss Isley ran 100 yards before she was forced by pain to drop to the ground.
The girl is under sentence for complicity with the robber band, led by her mother, Mamie Isley, who took several thousand dollars in cash and Liberty bonds from the Alert (Ind.) State Bank In May, 1921. She is pretty. Detectives declare that her mother used her as a tool.
Slayer Fined For Executing Individual With Human Traits

LONDON, October 3.—Howard Carter, the American Egyptologist, left for Luxor and the Valley of the Kings today to resume his excavations at the tomb of Tutankhamen. The scientist said he had not the slightest belief that any occult influence was responsible for the death of Earl Carnarvon, who succumbed to fever after discovering the tomb, and that he had no fears for himself in that direction.
“It is rather too much to ask me to believe that some spook is keeping watch and ward over the dead Pharaoh, ready to wreak vengeance on any one who goes too near,” Carter said.
Peculiar Theory, in Which Many Had Faith, That Was Put Forward by John C. Symmes
John C. Symmes (1779–1829) believed that the globe was hollow and inhabited. He claimed the earth was open at the poles to admit air, and contained within it other concentric hollow globes all inhabited in a like manner. In 1823 congress was petitioned to send an expedition to test out his theory, with himself in charge, but the matter was dropped. Humboldt states that Symmes often invited himself and Humphry Davy to descend to the earth’s interior and investigate animal and plant life. Symmes said the inside of the earth was lighted by two subterranean suns which he named “Pluto” and “Proserpine.” Arctic exploration and the discovery of the north and south poles proved part of his theory a myth.

Valley of the Kings, Luxor, Egypt, March 29 (By the Associated Press)—Within the last month three big ocean liners from the United States have touched at Egypt, and swarms of American tourists have flocked down to the scene of King Tutankhamun’s terrestrial resurrection In the Valley of the Kings. American travelers who heretofore have spent their winters in the Holy Land, Algeria or other semi-tropical resorts, have this year chosen the Nile because of its nearness to the tomb of the ancient Pharaoh. The great presidential shrines a Mount Vernon and Springfield, Ill., have not attracted a greater number of American pilgrims this winter than the strange subterranean sepulchre of Egypt.
“Have you seen the new tomb?” is the first question put to every American upon setting foot In Egypt. For in the popular view, not to have visited the now famous mummy chamber is not to have been in Egypt. American visitors, instead of stopping off at Cairo, as was their habit previously, now come directly down to Luxor, making the 450-mile journey from the capital in 12 hours, or more leisurely in one of the river excursion boats. The finding of Tutankhamun’s tomb has given this little Nile municipality an Importance it has not enjoyed in 3,000 years.

With the cotton manufacturers elsewhere falling Into line of wage advances set by the woolen mills the Fall River Cotton Manufacturers association today arranged a conference with the textile council on the wage question for next Monday. This action unexpected was accepted In the city generally as an indication of partial retreat by the mill owners from the position that they would shut down their plants rather than grant an increase.
