New York, July 3.—Terrific heat coupled with oppressive humidity, Sunday, caused several heat prostrations and drove the greater part of the city’s population to the beaches. The weather bureau reported a temperature of 91 degrees while the humidity hovered between 50 and 55.
Express Train Plunges Over High Embankment After Running into Open Switch
ATLANTIC CITY, July 3.—An open switch sent seven persons to their death and resulted in injury to about 75 others, about half of them seriously, when the Camden-Atlantic City night express on the Philadelphia Reading railroad running at full speed, left the rails on a curve at Winslow Junction and rolled down an embankment. The dead and injured were from South Jersey, Philadelphia and vicinity. Nearly all of the injured were removed to this city.
John F. Walt, an operator who has been in the service of the company for twenty-four years, is in a state of collapse in his home at Hammonton, N. J. He is under the surveillance of the state police. The engineer of the express, Walter Westcott, is dead. He was killed instantly.
Slayer Fined For Executing Individual With Human Traits
EVANSTON, Ill., July 1.—When a parrot teaches itself to swear it becomes an Individual with human traits instead of just a parrot. This is the decision of Justice of the Peace H. G. Williams.
Rutheda, the parrot of Mrs. Bertha Flugge, “was the purest and most clean-minded thing I ever saw” before it flew away from her, according to Mrs. Flugge.
Loss of $350,000 and Traffic to Martha’s Vineyard Interrupted When Steamship Sankaty Burns at Dock
New Bedford, Mass., July 1—The steamship service between this port, Wood’s Hole, Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket, just beginning its season of greatest traffic with summer vacationists, was rearranged today as a result of the destruction by fire last night of the steamship Sankaty and the dock of the New England Steamship Co. here. The fire which started in a pile of hay on the dock from a cause still undetermined, caused a loss of $350,000. As the dock used by boats on the New York service which is adjacent, was undamaged, it was arranged to use that and to put the other vessels of the fleet on a new schedule.
Gregg Served Notice on Wild West Showman
Norris B. Gregg, Director of Admissions and Concessions of the World’s Fair, served notice yesterday upon Colonel Cummins of the Cummins Wild West Show that Zach Mulhall must not again appear in that show on the Pike.

Butte, Mont., June 14.—Owing to the fact that the assistant manager of Columbia Gardens, the pleasure resort of this city, has trained the swans in the little artificial lake to bring to the shore articles thrown into the water, little Gertrude Onell owes her life.
