Resignation of Hartstene

Commander Henry J. Hartstene, of Arctic fame, in command of the gunboat Pawnee, has been detached at his own request. The reason he assigns is that he is a South Carolinian by birth, and as his vessel may be ordered against Charleston he prefers to abandon active service rather than light against his native State. Some of the naval officers justify and commend this conduct upon the part of Hartstene.
