October 24, 1861 – The Monroe Boys at Prospect Hill

A correspondent, with the army, informs us that, on Saturday, the 12th inst., Company F. of the 4th Reg. Pennsylvania Reserves, Capt. G. B. Keller, reconnoitered within the rebel lines, beyond Prospect Hill, Fairfax county, Virginia, and arrived at a farm house, two miles beyond our pickets. Upon inquiry, the old lady of the house informed them that she was Mrs. Jackson, the mother of Jackson who shot Ellsworth, and that her son was buried on the farm. Capt. Keller immediately reported the above to Head Quarters, and at 4 o’clock next morning, Gen. M’Call sent a body of Cavalry and Infantry and had Mrs. Jackson and her brother, Mr. Moore, arrested. A number of valuable letters and papers were also secured. We learn from a number of sources that Capt. Keller has one of the best drilled companies in the 4th Regiment.

Arrested? I wonder if she was a dangerous spy . . . or an old lady caught up in the dangerous times.
