This regiment is now permanently attached to General Graham s brigade, of Major General Hanks’ division, and is winning for itself no small amount of praise for the excellent discipline which it manifests In drill and on parade. Its organization has differed from other volunteer regiments, and in this respect resembles the regiments of the regular army, where the basis of formation is made upon the officers and not upon the men. The Chasseurs left New York on the 27th of August, and during the first four weeks of service were subjected to the severest trials of an arduous campaign. In its roster of officers are embraced some thirty ex members of the Seventh regiment, all of whom are excellent drill masters and disciplinarians. Colonel Cochrane commands in person, and is unwilling to be absent, though possessing authority to do so from the Secretary of War, while his regiment is in the advance and liable to engage the enemy at any moment.
