September 21, 1861 – Getting on Swimmingly

The Union and American, of yesterday, publishes the following from a letter received in this city. We congratulate our friend on this lucky escape. We don’t think now, and never did, that be was born to be drowned :

“On Friday, the 6th inst.. in visiting our line of pickets, Col. Jo. G. Pickett, in company with Gen. Anderson, in attempting to cross Valley River, which was considerably swollen from the heavy rains, came very near losing his life, in consequence of his horse stumbling and falling in the stream, which was almost as rapid as the impetuous Niagara. Both rider and horse were swept down some fifty yards and both were thought to be lost, but the gallant Colonel rescued himself, while his horse with great difficulty made the shore. The Colonel lost his pistol, blankets, and hat.”

Very nice use of “letters from the field.” These are fascinating.
