March 10, 1861 – The Sixty-Ninth Regiment

The new regimental armory for the Sixty-ninth regiment, over the Essex market, is fast approaching completion, and when it shall have been finished will be next in size to the Seventh regiment armory. To effect this arrangement the wall of the market building on the inner or Essex place side has been raised to the height of three stories. The new walls are sixteen inches thick, and the floor beams well anchored into them. The floors of both stories are supported in part by immense iron columns, running from the ground base of the building to the floor of the third story. The new armory will be covered with a massive truss roof. When completed the interior will comprise a regiment drill room, forty by ninety feet: company drill rooms covering an area of forty by eighty feet, and a battalion drill room, forty three by one hundred and twenty-six feet. A small gallery or orchestra box will be placed in the latter. The entrance to the whole will be from Essex place, where a large ornamental military staircase will be placed, reaching from the sidewalk to the second story.
