April 24, 1862 – Latest from Pensacola

Everything is reported quiet at Fort Pickens. Deserters were frequently coming over from Pensacola, which place had not been entirely evacuated by the rebel troops. They were engaged, however, in the removal of their guns, and, as large fires were seen on the mainland every night, it was conjectured that they were also destroying property. The city was under strict marshal law, and a Col. T. M. Jones, commanding the “Army of Pensacola,” issued a proclamation warning certain persons that he had erected a gallows, and that it they did not leave they would be hung. Among the fugitives from Pensacola is Mr Wood, whose family resides in New York City, and who came home in the Philadelphia.
