March 21, 1862 – The Position of Gen. Pope

The following diagram of the position at New Madrid in its investment by Gen. Pope, accompanies the letter of Major Sam. B. Raymond, which, we give on the second page:

Several miles below New Madrid, General Pope has established a battery at Point Pleasant, commanding the river. The siege guns marked “G” were sent down from Cairo, and in 35 hours’ time after leaving that place their fire opened on the enemy.
