March 16, 1862 – Bounty to Soldiers

On motion of Mr. Garner, House bill No. 290, to grant bounty to volunteers enlisting in the Confederate service for three years or the war, was taken up. The amendment of the committee on military affairs, to appropriate two millions of dollars for the purposes of the bill and authorizing the Governor, in his discretion to issue treasury notes to that amount, adopted.

Mr. Kennedy offered an amendment, giving a bounty of fifty dollars to each volunteer who has heretofore volunteered in the provisional army of Tennessee or the Confederate States and also the same amount to the widows and orphans of volunteers from Tennessee who have died or been killed in the service, which was adopted—ayes 47, nays 3. The bill as amended passed its second reading.
