The secretary of the navy, on Monday, received a letter from flag officer Foote, dated Cairo, 27th ult, in which he says: I have the honor to forward a communication just received from lieutenant commanding Bryant, the substance of which I have just telegraphed. The captain of the steamer who brings the despatch says six miles below Nashville was a battery on a high bluff, with fifteen guns mounted, but several were thrown into the river before we arrived. He also reports a strong Union feeling in and near Nashville; and Gov Harris, after vainly attempting to rally the citizens, left on Sunday for Memphis. The gunboat are the terror of the people at Nashville, and points on the Cumberland river. And on hearing of my arrival, supposing the gunboats would proceed immediately retreated panic-stricken. The unusually high water in the river enabled the boats providentially to ascend.
