February 25, 1862 – On the New York 51st

The second battalion of the 51st New York regiment had the van in the assault upon the rebel stronghold in the heart of Roanoke, and they had the honor of planting the stars and stripes upon the work. This battalion was commanded during the assault by Lieut. Colonel Robert B. Potter, who is a son of the venerable Bishop of the Protestant Episcopal Diocese of Pennsylvania. Bishop Potter has two or three other gallant sons who are in active service under the flag of the Union.
