Whiskey is doing more damage to our forces than the Yankees. It is far more dangerous to the soldier than the Minnie musket in the hands of the enemy. We are sorry to learn that so much of this “liquid fire and distilled damnation” finds its way into our camps. We understand that Col. Edward Johnson had 18 barrels of it poured out into the streets of Monterey last week. He is right, for it is an enemy to which no quarter should be given. It has become so plenteous on the road between here and Monterey that the stage drivers very frequently become boozy, and, in consequence, endanger the lives of the stage passengers.
