February 1, 1862 – Mississippi Raises Troops

The Panola Star states that the Mississippi Legislature has passed an act to raise ten thousand volunteers for the defense of the State, and if a sufficient number do not volunteer within a given time, then they are to be drafted. Also that the Senate has passed a bill calling a convention of the people of this State. The Mississippian says that one of the proposed objects is to appoint a council for the Governor, to supply deficiencies existing in the executive department
