An almost general stampede of slaves on the Eastern Shore is said to have taken place in consequence of the enemy’s invasion into Accomac and Northampton. It is estimated that there are about ten thousand slaves in those two counties, outnumbering as they do the whites in Northampton; and this large amount of property is, of course, at the entire mercy of the enemy. The slaves are escaping from their masters with the permission and connivance of the enemy, who have made no attempt whatever to arrest or check their exodus to Delaware and other portions of the hospitable North.—Richmond Examiner
