November 28, 1861 – Secession Rescinded in North Carolina

The Union men of North Carolina, and there are n large number of them in the eastern counties, have followed the examples of the rebels, though in favor of tho legitimate Government; they have put the doctrine of secession in practical operation and seceeded from the rest of the State. Five counties have formed a “Provisional Government,” and acknowledged the U. S. Constitution as the supreme law of the land, and declared all State offices vacated, whose incumbents have violated their oaths to support the Constitution, and the act of secession to be null and void. They have resolved to hold an election to be represented in the U. S. Congress, and appointed Rev. Mr. Tayler their Governor. When five counties in he State can dare to act in this manner, and the State itself in arms against the General Government, the Union feeling must be very strong in North Carolina yet, as it is in a number of other Stales now arrayed under the secession flag.
