October 17, 1861 – Our Soldiers in Virginia

The following is the conclusion of a report to his Excellency Governor Pickens, made by a physician sent on by him to examine into the sanitary condition of all our regiments in Virginia:

“The sick of all the regiments in General Bonham’s and General Jones’ brigade are now being sent back to the receiving hospitals. The Surgeon of this regiment (Col. William’s) is much better supplied than any Surgeon in the brigade, he having saved his hospital stores in the retreat from Fairfax, and since then he has had a requisition partly filled. Most of the companies have received their winter uniforms, and all of them have made arrangements to have them soon. There are still on hand three boxes of shoes, and all have been supplied that are in want. New tents are being distributed slowly among the different regiments, and I expect they will all be supplied by winter.”
