August 27, 1861 – Commander Porter

Our readers are already familiar with the fact that Commander Porter, for two years or more in command of the sloop of war St. Mary’s, was not long ago deprived of it, on the suspicion that he was disloyal to the Government. The ground for this, it is supposed, was a letter purporting to be written by him to his son, who, report says, is attached to the Confederate army. A friend of ours, who has known Commander Porter long and well, informs us that he has just had a private conversation with him, and that the commander pronounces the letter in question a bold forgery, and has proofs to this effect. Whatever may be the merits of the question, it cannot be supposed that any vindication which he may offer will fail to receive attention from the proper department of the Government.
