August 6, 1861 – From the Guards

We received a letter yesterday, from Lieut. JORDAN, under date of July 31st. The 5th Regiment was still at Burlington. They were to receive their arms the next day, and Mr. JORDAN’S impression was that the regiment would soon be ordered to Missouri to take the place of the Iowa 2d Regiment, lately withdrawn from the line of the Hannibal and St Joe Railroad, and now at Bird’s Point with Gen. Fremont. The box of provisions had not yet been received, although it was shipped at Dubuque on the 27th, on the Steamer Metropolitan. A member of the Guards, named Geo. Gray cut himself severely with an axe, cutting the middle finger of one hand almost through the bone, and shaving the end of the fore finger entirely off. The wound was dressed by the surgeon, and the man was doing well.
