A recent English paper, in an obituary notice, states, with solemn gravity, that the deceased was notable “for the active part he took in the management of the society for the preservation of ancient footpaths,” and for the fact that he was “Secretary to the Beer sellers’ Association,” both of which Pickwickian titles the writer seemed to think conferred upon their holder a passport to fame.
