July 8, 1861 – Navy Yard Matters

On  yesterday the steamer Baltimore, Capt Mitchell, took the Scott Life Guards, and on Saturday the Third Maine Regiment, to Alexandria.

The steam transport Cambridge. which brought Col. Case’s Eleventh Massachusetts Regiment here from Boston, is purchased by the Government, and is to be converted into a gunboat. Yesterday she was brought to the Navy Yard from the stream off the Arsenal, and is to be mounted with 32-pounder rifled cannon and upper deck howitzers.

The gunboat Yankee lays at the Navy Yard awaiting orders. Her destination is probably the vicinity of Norfolk
