June 14, 1861 – The Blockade

The government has now in its service 114 vessels, which will be employed in the blockade. As there are but few available harbors, this fleet will close up the ports to the satisfaction of Lord Derby who “knew perfectly well” it could not be done. The papers say this Lord Derby is the same who “knew” a steam vessel could never cross the Atlantic.
