March 11, 1861 – The Palmetto Flag in Richmond

The stars and stripes raised by the Bell and Everett men, in Jefferson ward, last October-, were hauled down yesterday from the lofty pole erected by them, near the vegetable market; and about 4 o’clock, P M in pursuance of public notice, a large and promiscuous crowd assembled to witness the ceremony of hoisting a ”Palmetto flag” in the place of the “Star Spangled Banner.” Previously, Smith’s band marched down Main street in full blast, to draw attention to the event. When the band arrived Mr Berry Amos pulled the halyards, and amid the cheers of the masses present, sent aloft a white flag, upon which was painted a Palmetto tree, encircled by a rattlesnake. Speeches in keeping with the occasion were then delivered.— Rich. Whig, March 9
