February 20, 1861 – Opinion on Secession

Florida has repudiated the star spangled banner. She was grateful enough for the sight of it when her atmosphere was loaded with the war-whoops of Seminoles. Louisiana has repudiated it, but it was a joy and a beauty to her eyes when the troops of Kentucky and Tennessee marched under it to protect her emporium from the ravages of the hosts whose war-cry was “beauty and booty.” Texas, too, is about to repudiate it, but her soul was gladdened by its stars and stripes as it led on the army which it beat back and annihilated forever the power of her dreaded enemy.—Louisville Journal
