February 15, 1861 – Southern Republic Formed

The new republic at the South has started off a little ahead of time. Jeff Davis of Mississippi, is chosen president and Alexander H. Stevens of Georgia, vice president. The new confederacy takes the old constitution of the Union which they have just repudiated, making some alterations and amendments. They are to have free trade with the whole world except the North. “How we apples will swim” for a little while.
