February 9, 1861 – Treatment of the Palmetto Flag

The Palmette in Kentucky

A Palmetto flag made its appearance at Glasgow, Kentucky, the other day. It was treated with little respect. A crowd took it in charge, placed it over a barrel of tar, and, after dipping it in the same material, burned it.

The Palmetto at Annapolis

The Annapolis Republican of Thursday says : A Palmetto flag was hoisted on Tuesday night near St. Anne’s chinch, in this city. It waved but a short time, however; for as soon as the Union boys discovered it, on Wednesday morning, they hauled it down and tore the odious emblem in pieces. The stars and stripes are good enough for the Union men of Annapolis.
