On Friday the House of Representatives went into committee of the whole, Dr. Parker in the chair, on the subject of establishing a new county, composed of the towns in Lincoln, west of the the Kennebec and the towns of Harpswell, Danville, Durham and Brunswick, ia the county of Cumberland. An interesting and animated debate occupied most of the afternoon, when the committee rose and reported in favour of the new county, which report was accepted in the House by a small majority. Mr. Speaker, Ames, made a long and eloquent speech in the affirmative and was supported by Messrs. Purrington, of Bowdoin, Sheppard, of Surry, Williams, of Augusta, &c.
In the negative were Messrs. Wallingford, Adams, Thatcher, Parsons, &c.
In the Senate the subject was referred to the next Legislature.
