January 25, 1861 – Florida’s Villainy

There is no feature in the villainy of secession, no treason so “doubly distilled,” as that of Florida—a vagrant, piratical strip of territory, abounding in swamps, Indians, runaway negroes and alligators. Purchased to prevent it from becoming a resort and receptacle for every description of marauders, and reformed at an expense of more than thirty millions of dollars, it is now making war upon the Government! If there be virtue in gunpowder and hemp, every Florida traitor who escapes shooting should be hung.
